TCU's graduate school of Engineering consists of Master's programs served as pre-Doctor's programs and Doctor's programs. The full quota of all 7 subjects is 202 students; it is the scale which marks the top 10th position among 73 private graduate schools of science and engineering and 83 graduate courses all over Japan. Focused on basic research, it promotes academic progress and help train researchers and engineers with advanced skills.
At this time of scarce employment opportunities due to a long term recession, major corporations are mainly hiring those with graduate degrees, and along with changes in industrial structure, those with the ability to discover and solve problems are increasingly valued in our society.
There are four types of admission to graduate school:
- Admission based upon recommendation from TCU undergraduate school and interviews - June every year.
About half of the student quota may be filled through this process.
- General Entrance Examination (including Special Entrance Examination for foreign students)--September and February every year. Applicants are judged by achievement test, interview, transcripts, and medical examination.
- Through an agreement, admission to graduate school of Kogakuin University, Shibaura Institute of Tech nology or Tokyo Denki University is now available based upon recommendation and interviews.
- Special Entrance Examination for adults and foreign students.
On entrance to the graduate school, students are assigned to seminars based on the subjects of study, and study under the guidance of the advisers.
Students mainly study subjects which are related to their majors. Also besides the subjects within their majors, they can take subjects in other majors if necessary.
Minimum of two years residence and 30 credits, as well as the completion of a master's thesis, are required for the Master's Degree. A candidate must also pass the final examination. Also minimum of 40 credits, as well as completion of a monograph are required for the Master of Engineering's Degree. A candidate must also pass the final examination.
Minimum of three years residence under the guidance of an adviser after completing the Master's program, as well as the completion of a Doctor's thesis are required for a Doctor's degree. Candidates must also pass the final examination.
It is possible to obtain either the Junior High School Special Teacher Certificate in "Technology" and the Senior High School Special Teacher Certificate in "Industry". However, acquisition of Special Teacher Certificate in "Technology" is only limited to the bachelors of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical System Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Among those who completed undergraduate study at TCU, outstanding students may receive tuition exemption to pursue further academic study at TCU's graduate school.
