Message to Students] President's Message (4/20)
To all students
Due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the university is unable to welcome you to campus as we usually would. We are still not sure when COVID-19 will subside or what regulations will be imposed by the national and local governments, but we have decided to write this message to report on current developments at the university and ask for your understanding.
The university will begin classes on May 18. However, due to the expansion of COVID-19, we believe that regular classes will be difficult. For this reason, the university has decided that the first quarter will be a network-based distance learning experience. The class format after the second quarter will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
We have already conducted a questionnaire from the university about what kind of distance learning should be used, and the communication systems such as computers and Wi-Fi that are necessary for this, but please keep an eye out for further communications from the university. A quick response from all students is required. We will use the off-campus systems and the WebClass lecture support system to deliver online lectures, so we ask that you prepare yourself to take online lectures by becoming familiar with these systems.
A computer will also be required. This is a good opportunity to purchase one. Having said that, if you are unable to purchase one on your own, the university will lend you a computer, but please understand that it is difficult to provide one for everyone. We will notify you via email or on our website when we are ready to lend the computers out at the university.
There is about a month until the start of classes. Please "STAY HOME" and make the most of this time. You may want to study English intensively. There are a variety of materials available. I've used some, and it was a new way to learn for me. It's also good to read a long book that you wouldn't normally read. I am re-reading Jared Diamond's The Collapse of Civilization: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive, which I had previously recommended as a library recommendation. This book tells us the history of the rise and fall of civilization, including the infectious diseases that are occurring now.
The expansion of COVID-19 will stop at some point. You’re being asked to "stay home" so that it doesn't civilization does not “collapse.” I fear that this disaster will stop you from continuing your learning and affect your future. Distance learning is said to be as effective as or better than face-to-face learning if you are proactive in your approach to learning.
We look forward to seeing you on campus as COVID-19 settles down as soon as possible. Let's get through these hard timestogether.
