[Message to Students] Message from the President (5/15)
To all students
Classes will begin on May 18. Initially, classes were delayed by one month to start on May 4th, but they will be postponed by another two weeks. Any further delays in classes may prevent you from finishing what you are supposed to be learning in university.
Due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the first quarter will be taught by distance learning. This is the first time that a large-scale distance learning program has been implemented at the university, and since April, faculty and staff have been working together to consider and prepare for the program in a variety of ways. We decided that distance learning would be best for our current situation. There may be many glitches, but with your help, let's make this new method of education a reality. The entire faculty and staff will do their best to keep up with your learning.
Distance learning is not the same as traditional face-to-face learning. It can't be done the same way. However, we have to make sure that the effectiveness of education is not diminished. In order to do so, you must be willing to learn on your own and be an active learner. In online classes, you and your instructor are directly connected via the internet, so I think there are some positive aspects that differ from face-to-face classes, for example when you make use of the chat function.
In addition, developing an environment for online classes will be a useful tool for learning at universities even after the coronavirus pandemic has passed.
This coronavirus pandemic is something we have never experienced before. Initially, the economic impact was said to be on par with the Great Recession and the bursting of the bubble economy. Recently, however, it has begun to be described as the most difficult situation since World War II, far beyond that. You are trying to get through this very difficult situation. As a university, we want to make sure that no matter what the situation is, we will maintain our level of education and never negatively impact your future.
As classes begin, Gotoh Educational Corporation, which runs the university and the university will together provide 50,000 yen to all students. This subsidizes the costs which students are required to pay for equipment and communication costs for distance learning and to purchase books for self-study. A computer will be loaned to students who do not have their own computer in order to conduct distance learning. We have secured the required number as identified by the questionnaire. You can use this computer for up to a year before you pass it on to your juniors. This support, including personal computers, was made possible through the support of the University's Alumni Association, and I would like to express my deepest thanks.
This is a message to welcome the start of class with the hope that you will continue to learn and that this experience will have a positive effect on you.
Let's work together to overcome this unprecedented challenge.
